Photo, and a tangential comment.

I like the photo. It looks rather Gursky!

However, I do sometimes worry that - like the photo - en.wikipedia focusses on brands of retail goods; service brands, and brands which aren't bought by the typical reader (ie. B2B rather than B2C), often get overlooked. Hopefully this project won't get stuck in that rut! bobrayner (talk) 12:00, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Brand article consolidation

A while back I went to improve the article on brand management, but realized I needed to consolidate about 20 some-odd articles before I proceed. It fell off my radar, because I felt I needed more input and collaboration from others, but below is the rough plan I had for consolidation if anyone cares to comment or help out. CorporateM (Talk) 13:32, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

  • There are some very logical suggestions here, and some WP:BOLD editing can better-organize much of this content. Regarding the Brand community article being merged to either Brand loyalty or Brand management, this is a close call regarding which merge target to choose because they're all closely related. I'm leaning toward Brand loyalty as the merge target because it seems to be a slightly better fit. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:15, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

How does this wikiproject plan to deal with missing brand categories?

Forgive me if I am posting something that does not make sense - I am new to this.

I was looking at Category:Brands by product type but could not find ammunition there. However Category:Ammunition manufacturers does exist. So I am wondering why this type of brand does not exist? Ottawahitech (talk) 01:03, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Logo Quiz: a useful to-do list of missing brands

I previously posted the following at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Companies, and did not get a response. Maybe this WikiProject is a better venue?

Logo Quiz is one of the most popular games nowadays for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. In total there are 9 levels and in each level you have to discover the name of the brand / company. A partial logo is shown and you have to guess it correctly

Though this is hardly a reliable criterion for notability; I am suggesting this as a sort of to-do list for article creation:

All the logos in this game (by "Bubble Quiz Games"?) are purported to be "famous", especially those in the game's lower levels, but many of the companies mentioned by the above website as solutions to the quiz have no Wikipedia article. As I am especially ignorant of brands, can someone acquainted with better-known brands check the list provided there and see which famous brands are missing from Wikipedia?

  • Hello User:????? (Hasirpad). Thanks for the suggestion. I've added your request to the project's Article to-do list as an article request. Northamerica1000(talk) 16:58, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Automatically updating talk pages with the project banner - DodoBot AnomieBOT

User:DodoBot can automatically tag articles with this project's banner working from the categories of this project's focus. The bot also has some abilities to perform various auto-assessments (e.g. based on stub tags in articles, article length, and other factors). It would take some work and time to accomplish, particularly to create the pages for the bot to work from. Here's an example page from WikiProject Toronto regarding how the list would need to be formatted (with this project's categories, of course), which the bot reads from. Here is the relevant information:

  • User:DodoBot/Process
  • User talk:DodoBot/Requests

-- Northamerica1000(talk) 13:57, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Note: The editor that manages DodoBot hasn't contributed to Wikipedia since around late-November, 2012, so here are some options below. Northamerica1000(talk) 13:25, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Update

I'm currently working on a master list for AnomieBOT to read from. It will take some time, as I want it to be accurate and focused upon topics that are very specific to this project's scope. When it is completed, I will post it on this talk page for people's perusal and to obtain input. Northamerica1000(talk) 14:29, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

  • The list has been completed and posted on this talk page, see below at Proceeding with automatic project banner tagging using AnomieBOT. Northamerica1000(talk) 17:41, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Brand piracy

Maybe this article should be merged with Counterfeit consumer goods. NordhornerII (talk) _The man from Nordhorn 01:27, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

  • Yes, there seems to be a connection between brands and trademarks. But what exactly is the connection? Ottawahitech (talk) 22:52, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Trademarks are a subset of brands. All trademarks are "brands", but not all brands are trademarks. Trademarking is just a way to legally protect a brand and insure exclusive use of the brand name, for the purpose of preventing confusing and dilution in the marketplace. To a degree, it is even consumer protection. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 16:56, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Motor vehicle models

Since we have the category Category:Vehicles by brand, it appears that motor vehicle, automobile and motorcycle model talk pages should be tagged with {{WikiProject Brands}}, the project banner template (e.g. such as on the Ford Model T talk page). In conventional usage, the make typically refers to the manufacturer, while the model refers to the specific product, so articles about the motor vehicle companies should not be tagged, except perhaps in cases when the model is the same as the company name and the information is all in one article. Per a new discussion on my talk page regarding this matter, I'm posting this here for people's input. It appears that motor vehicle models are within the scope of this project. Northamerica1000(talk) 12:55, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Proceeding with automatic project banner tagging using AnomieBOT

The following below are the relevant lists of categories and subcategories for AnomieBOT to read from to perform automatic talk page tagging with this project's banner. A great deal of time, cross-checking, double-checking, etc. went into compiling this list, to maintain very high accuracy and precision, so that only relevant categories are present. Everything has been double-checked to eliminate duplicate entries. I have manually checked all the way through all of the category trees that are part of the project's scope, to ensure that none were missed. Many categories that are not based upon brands (e.g. companies) are not included.

The following below is the list of vehicle brands (models) for automatic talk page tagging with this project's banner. These are posted in this separate list to make the navigation of content within these lists easier for editors here. These are to be combined with the above categories into one master list, which AnomieBOT will read from.

The following below are a sampling of categories and subcategories that are being skipped from automatic tagging, because they contained an assortment of topics other than just brand-related topics, or have content that is duplicated in a higher-level category. Examples of categories skipped include companies, comic books and imprints, concept vehicles, manufacturers, platforms, restaurants, airplanes, ships and vehicle manufacturers. Many others were also skipped.

Many of these skipped categories were also manually checked by clicking through to view them, and I have manually added the project's banner to topics within the category trees that are brand-related, while skipping those that are not. Some subcategories existent within some of the main categories have been included on the bot run list, in instances when they meet the scope of the project. Again, this is a sampling of skipped categories, to give editors an idea of what was skipped. An exhaustive list would be much longer.

In order to proceed, the first two lists above need to receive approval from Wikipedia editors. Members of this project will be notified with neutrally-worded notifications of this discussion's post. Please note that the third list of skipped categories does not need approval, and was provided as a courtesy. Please provide comments below, and thank you for participating.

Including company names in Backend as a Service article

Hello. Recently, I worked to update the Backend as a service (BaaS) article at the behest of Kinvey, a BaaS provider. The first version of the article that was posted, with help from volunteer editors, included a sentence that detailed some of major BaaS providers. However, this portion of the article turned into something of a spam magnet, and a volunteer editor removed the sentence entirely (see background here).

I still think there's good reason to include the discussion of major providers, however, and provided my reasoning here. We've had a lot of discussion, but as of yet, there's not been a consensus about how we should deal with including company names in the article.

Given WP:Brands' potential interest in the issue of including providers in articles, I'm hoping an editor or two from here might be willing to take a look and provide some input about what they think a good solution to the issue would be. Thanks! ChrisPond (Talk · COI) 20:43, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Media franchises

The entertainment industry has established its own brands and franchises. Sheer media franchises demonstrate already perfectly how a franchise as such works. Moreover some media franchises are also well-known for merchandising and/or product placement. So there are plenty of interferences with our usual subjects. I like to ask all of you to support the WikiProject Media franchises. In case you seem not to have given much thought to media franchises yet just ask yourself whether you ever enjoyed Star Wars, James Bond, Tarzan or Harry Potter. Maybe you've even once bought toys, miniature cars, novels or electronic games because they were branded accordingly.NordhornerII (Talk) _The man from Nordhorn 12:16, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Retrovelo

What about Retrovelo? I came across this brand when I was reading Spiegel Online. There was an article about this company. Well, I spend most of my time in Münster, also known as "the bicycle capital of Germany". I got under the impession that Retrovelo is for bicyclists what a Morgan Plus V 8 is for car enthusiasts. Looking for links this was what looked best to me:

Is that sufficient to plead for notability? If so, I'd like to write the article. (Unless somebody else wants it more.) So, what about the notability of this internationally recognised brand? NordhornerII(talk) _The man from Nordhorn 23:06, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Hiding the real producer

Hello!

Legal question. Are there laws prohibiting one company from producing a brand that it sells as being completely separate from itself?

Example: "Company A" is well-known for producing "Brand A". All of a sudden it begins also producing "Brand B" but nowhere in its advertising, not even in the small print, is it mentioned that "Brand B" is linked in any way to "Company A". Only once you sign a contract for using "Brand B" do you find out that you are actually signing the contract with "Company A".

Is this some reverse type of passing off, or false advertising, or some other concept altogether? Is it legal, illegal, or a grey area?

Thanks in advance! BigSteve (talk) 07:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Request for new Wikipedia page: Philips subsidiary company - Woox Innovations

Hello! In 2013, Philips Lifestyle Entertainment business group was going to be sold to a Japanese firm Funai. Unfortunately the deal fell apart but the business group anyway became a stand-alone subsidiary company within Philips, under a new name: WOOX Innovations.

I actually work in WOOX Innovations and want to create a Wikipedia page for our company. However to avoid biased content, and the fact that this is my first time using Wikipedia - I thought it'd be better if i ask the help of the experts :). I will gladly supply any information needed to make the page as informative as it can be, but I definitely need guidance / help on actually creating the new page. Is this something that interest you? Thank you everybody.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Brands At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

o Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

o Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

o Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

o Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

o Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen's Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:
